Metformin is an anti-hyperglycemic drug used as the first drug of choice to manage type 2 DM that belongs to the class of Biguanides. It helps to reduce the levels of blood glucose by reducing the amount of glucose produced in the hepatic system, decreasing the amount of glucose absorbed in the intestinal space, and increasing the sensitivity of insulin through the utilization of peripheral glucose (Rena, Hardie & Pearson, 2017). Metformin is contraindicated in patients with a well-documented hypersensitivity to metformin, those with severe renal impairment, and chronic or acute metabolic acidosis. The FDA also warns on using metformin on patients aged 65 years or older and those with moderate to severe hypoxic states such as heart failure and in patients with hepatic failure (Rena, Hardie & Pearson, 2017). The most important education to reinforce as provided by an RN is to take metformin with meals as this helps to reduce bowel and stomach side effects that tend to occur in the initial weeks of treatment.Diabetes Type 2 Essay Paper

The primary purpose of lifestyle changes in patients diagnosed with type 2 DM is to maintain good glycemic control. The required lifestyle changes a person diagnosed with type 2 DM should make are: reducing excessive weight through regular moderate or vigorous physical activity to have a healthy BMI (18.5-24.9) (Chong et al., 2017). A patient should also make the following dietary changes: taking wholegrain foods in place of refined carbohydrates, increasing the intake of high diet fibers, and decreasing the amount of saturated fats. Examples of the most recommended foods are lentils, vegetables, beans, and fruits. Oguntibeju (2019) highlights constant stress as a potential factor that hinders good glycemic control, a person diagnosed with type 2 DM can engage in techniques for stress management such as mindfulness as a strategy to control changes related to stress-related blood glucose.
